way before the end of August I'm thinking that's a very big possibility this year I think we're going to I think it's going to be good I really do I think we're going to,
how old is going to be gone and so there's days in August and September you know especially that Saturday,
pretty and nice and cool in the morning.
Yeah I know I know right I hear you because it happened last several years but but for the life of me I can't remember what was going on on Saturday morning.

And so that means that all you do is you just stand there and tell people what to do right that's it that's you never get onto anything.
The plug it in to hang out and watch the integral role work of.
I will I will say this and I will say this and I know that you do a ton of a ton of work and we'll get to all that in a minute but I must say that,
the last several years that I've I've been standing next to you at the start of the parade in and,
touching your volunteers work they work their butt off to get that parade up so i just just a quick shout out to all the volunteers that are there from an interest seven o'clock in the morning or something right mean just trying to getting everybody worried.
[4:07] Yeah it's it's an early morning for everybody and they've on here's the that are on the the great team,
are spectacular I love all of them and they do
they do the majority of the work on Saturday morning and then the folks to come out to help us get the parade on the road store not officially part of the praise team but he volunteered to help us are angels,
we appreciate everybody who showed up it is not a small thing to get thirty five hundred people in seventy vehicles on the road.
Yeah from the first grade at DragonCon which I think you could have done it.
All your fingers and toes and had maybe one ever.
No no be able not like that he now has big of the sun and it mean to be you basically have a happy ending you unfortunately just because the house i'm in and city permits and stuff like that,
you have that right god make more it not because we don't love you but it.

Well if if I could if I could get everybody who wanted to be in the parade in the parade that be great but I think it would be an all day extravaganza.

[5:38] Yeah yeah we have to negotiate with the city for a permit that allows us to basically called traffic in downtown.
Atlanta 4 hours and our permit is only good until noonish and that means we have to be clear of the street by then and I just physically cannot push any more people.
Down the street and have a sauce off and cleared and have the city streets open again if I had more people so that's why we capped.
And I will tell you guys you never you never had to realism like telling zombies to shuffle fast.

So many vehicles to I mean I love it I think it's absolutely awesome but I mean not just.

So there's a ton of things that a lot of lot of really good cars and,
and the thing is is that it's like the costumes that you see the people wearing this Vehicles we have the carpet Vehicles again to but those vehicles are,
are done out of love and the pocket.
Of the people who enter them in the parade so every everybody,
it's all their blood sweat tears and dollars on it and it looks wonderful and we appreciate every single one of them is shows up.

We're gonna be right on her and said that i cool he is everything dr graham marshall and and all the fun got,
the grill are you gonna now i didn't ruing your thunder on that but i are there any other gap you can they got great news andrew luck for those those people that the don't know who who is the grand marshall is your jan.

Wanna be with their fan groups and what they are in the parade one of those john the land see who will be riding with this,
skeptic folks and then Joel Hudson from Mystery Science Theater is going to be with the marching this keys and he's planning on a bunch of good stuff including having the Tom & Company showing up in Mecha suit so that'll be interesting
that will be interesting.

And then so yeah that is going to be awesome,
we also do have two marching bands one from high school and one from I think and one of a fan kind of a.
Atlanta area older group that gets together and they're fun too and I never say their name right so.
It will not even see where are turning them.

And they've been with us a couple years now and yeah a lot of fun to have.

Prayers and request for the bike kind of weather which is brilliantly original right that's a good we've been blessed the last several,
parade in that it has been it hasn't very pleasanton.
Relatively speaking for Atlanta for during his gone off right I mean it's.
It's hella banana we ask this question I know we asked a question each year but rain or shine.
We have we have one window of opportunity to put spray tan in that Saturday morning so rain-or-shine it goes.

Or unless you want to see me and my team and security kind of walking down the street with umbrellas that will be telling everybody there's no Freight.

The other thing is that the people who are dragon con people in our in the hotel that have writing on tv or streaming him you should be able to up grade pretty much,
why we have people at the end of the parade at DragonCon volunteer she will be chatting and then talking about the parade.

So that's one way to watch I think it will also be on the streaming but I can't be a hundred percent sure of that as being broadcast,

And I actually was telling some people about that they're like wait what I'm like yes you can DragonCon parade we are on the CW last year,
how will be in your baby and their like oh my god like in my mouth and want you might yet yet you can we love people come down but i mean it is really amazing the peachtree street,
four and five six seven deep as people are watching this parade,
for people who are not from Atlanta this is all in downtown Atlanta it will be in the app.
It is there you will see many many maps of this parade but gentle for those of us who either been there before or no downtown how what is the route of this parade.
[14:58] Okay the route is mainly on Peachtree Street and we start,
at Peachtree and Linden which if you're looking for a landmark is just a block south of the Fox Theater
so it's not down there and then we go about 8 blocks or so on Peachtree Street moving south
back towards the hotels the host hotels and will pass by the Hyatt and we'll pass at the Westin where we turn,
and we'll get it done and then when we get down at the bottom of that Hill will turn again to,
Court notes,
what is what is working didn't hear i'm that joey get to the marriott marquis which is where the parade in.

Front of the Marquis behind the Hyatt so if people are like wondering and I also want to say this a lot of people every year when we ride at the front of the parade
I'm going to go that's not always the best place to be somebody just been down there John.
But in in a lot of people are trying to say like all I want to get pictures before the parade you can't do it I'm sorry folks.
Here is Grayson and you have that be at you have to have your parade credentials to get in,
you are too second what lee just said was basically,
at the beginning of the parade everything is sort of crunch together as as it moves down I mean,
if it were me in an hour I were watching the parade I would want to be at least a block away from the start of the parade cuz that's when everyone starts to to sort of stretch out a little bit until you get better pictures that way as opposed to.
Write the beginning to if you're not supposed to be in the parade staging area you're not supposed to be in the parade staging area correct.

Yeah we probably have we have a actually we have a fenced area which is our staging area which is working really well for us to get in.

To get to the staging area we do not invite photographers are crafted near and last.
A very special exemption when measuring winter made a long time headings odd yeah.
It's very busy it's very crazy.
Ight people by trying to find where they're supposed to be there ready to march it moving vehicles back and forth on the street outside there's it's just.
Just not a good place at all and,
and unfortunately sometimes if it causes us delays because if you're if you're out there trying to take pictures and we're trying to get a.
Get the show on the road you got to move for it so it's just not a good place and people.
[18:40] I'm having having fun with what they're doing on the road until they're couple blocks out of staging so,
we're trying and these wonderful wonderful people who are not me are trying to move the vehicle.
Before they're supposed to be an Ender just really trying to watch that vehicle and making sure nobody's going to get this and everything else,
be like on the picture no you really are get please yeah um mood i'm not trying to be mean god but we said we have a time period and,
we really want to make sure everybody safe it's a lot about that.
And speaking of speaking of fan of a prey credential so you mention that you need a wristband but first of all just just to let everybody know that's that's listening the the.
I'll be in the parade list is argan posted corrected thirty done.
[19:46] Right so that that was taken care of back in February correct.
[19:52] Yeah we open upgrade registration on February 15th every year and it's an online process you.
You go online you enter what you want to enter into the parade will review it and then let you know whether it's you know appropriate or not.
And then in a few weeks or so we will post an official list of currently in prey.
[20:22] So it's too late at this point,
to get into the parade v the normal registration process that's that's not gonna happen if,
do you know if you were a group he apart of a group and you haven't talk to your group lead at this point probably won't make sure you've done so to make sure that they know your coming correct.

Exactly if you're part of a registered group you need to be in touch with them so cuz they're going to give you all the information that you're going to need to participate as well so
very important if your individual who signed without,
and will be cord coordinating with you directly to your email when you mention the the there's of there's a wait list as well,
which I think is like 300-plus people this point.
Been getting tougher to get into the parade as far as the number of folks you sign up for early on this year we close registration within 8 hours of opening.
We set up a waitlist and we have been able to move some people off the waitlist which is really good but currently I believe I'm standing at around 400 and some odd people in the waitlist right now.
Not at all optimistic that everybody's going to get in but.
[21:59] What continue to move all over as we can find a yeah it's if you wanna because you wanna roll the dice and he in,
you never know on the waitlist I was looking it up for Forge and she's having internet problems that's why we're on the phone for 1 hour,
the best way to I found to get to it was just to go to dragoncon.org in go under participate and be in the parade,
and if you go there there's a link right to the wait till 2018 wait list also great links to the to the Facebook DragonCon parade group 2.
[22:40] And that's a good group for anybody who's interested in the freighter who's planning on marching in the fridge really good group to join or at least to watch a lot of information,
get shared a lot of good people and it's not something that's like constantly busy so it's not going to overwhelm you with the traffic on it,
what are the thing I wanted to say is Jan also said you have to have your badge,
hey hello there under the money grabbing at saturday morning and then run to get a break hate that.
Jack in the Box every year,
we have somebody who is out which going but,
but they said they leaving here for me and I'm like dude that you need to call them I'm not trying to be mean I don't I don't have that list.
Hello those people who are like,
yeah you're not able to get down there until that morning to get your break Prudential your wristband you need to have a plan for how that person is going to,
yeah you're the leader of a group I know you probably already have your plan and thank you very much but we'll make sure everybody who's going to be in your group knows that also real quick.

if you are going to be a Saturday only member I really really recommend that you go online in the DragonCon store and go ahead and purchase your Saturday membership with a pre-sale because you will get a postcard in the mail confirming that you are a member
and you can bring that postcard to us,
and we will honor that the same as a badge otherwise you're going to have to go down to registration and stand in the line and get your,
there and then run up to the staging so that you'll have it
as far as the wristbands are concerned yes if you're a member of a group your group lead should have coordinated with you on when and where you can get the wristbands from them if you are an individual who signed up,
do you have the list.
Our database there that Heather is Manning and we will have your wristband there but only if you find yourself up,
coordinate with your group and and also Jan what time does the staging area open.
[25:39] We're usually down around seven am we officially open at around seven thirty medical can come earlier.
[25:50] Folks who are looking to be added to march i would say seven thirty would be the earliest i would want anybody to show.
You need to be there in play.
And stays in ready to go no later than nine thirty and anytime after that we can not guarantee that you will be marching in the parade or in the group that you're supposed to be wearing.
I get an and that's what i'm hoping you would get you could i cannot tell you how many people who are there right and they're trying to find whatever and art and they get there at,
you know 9 or they get there right at 10 we've already got like seven or eight group set up to walk out,
and if they don't know one of the early one or whatever it's like the weekends got here I'm like I'm so sorry,
Sakura's already gone if you can sit in with another group and you got your credentials you may do that but otherwise I can't you can't like join the break in route we actually really,
and we don't do that just to let you know guys.
[26:58] Get there early please this is not the day the thing that you can just slide in at 9 and be fine or at 9:30 and be fine get there early.
And yeah if your loan is are date yet your name is our database and that consists of
group leaders and the folks who registered themselves individually if your name is in the database you will get what we call,
the cheetah my email about two weeks before the convention start that has,
probably more information than you ever thought you needed to participate in the parade all the who what when where and it stresses that you need to be there in place.
By 9:30 not to take a shuttle that leaves the Marriott after 9:30 get there so that you will be able to ensure that you have your place in the break because it is true once we get it on the road,
it's on the road it's moving and you know if you can,
set yourself in somewhere that's fine you know otherwise you're just kind of you know that a lot for the year.

anytime between like 9:45 and about 10 the biggest push for those in staging is getting everybody especially those first like 10 groups really setup,
because you got to get out very quickly and then I'll slow down a little bit.
Those were the first ones because those are where some of the bigger cars are in and getting all of that in order in front of peace,
please please please this is the one day if you're ever ever ever really do something this is the one day to be early really plan on being down there
finding your group around 9 a.m. treated like you treated like a doctor who guest panel be there early.

How does the parade in every year. Just was Santa because all braids have marching bands and must end with Santa but also what the very end of the braids.

grouping of official cars that are right behind Santa.

The key part there to those is that when you do see Jan's car or you do see Santa probably start going to go ahead and start packing up at that point.

but do take that time that opportunity to start packing your stuff up and getting yourself ready if you're sitting down if you got kids or whatever,
get them in tow because that is a massive amount of people and I'm going to post it when I post this podcast post with a post of this,
the actual physical post of the first DragonCon parade.
I took pictures it was in and I have a couple but but it was with the.
I think it's 500 first was coming down I mean I just random Stormtroopers.

[34:11] Yeah i started i for with a parade and thousand and bori think it was in hog,
maybe like 300 and some odd participants and truly it was just a meet-up down and Woodruff Park and then we would kind of go up Peachtree Street,
behind them in it was a very short route.
Very few people and there was just very few folks on the street until you got up around where the host hotels are see what's going on now.
The number of people that line the sidewalks all the way from staging,
through this band who stand in the parking garages who are hanging off balconies who were watching it from hotel it's amazing it's absolutely amazing.

So write up for two things number one right after the parade if your are a Dragon Con attendee,
there may be a lot of bad check I know last year there were a good many more right after the parade just because there's such a mess of people,
and some people might like gonna go and see the cock user error in the hotel,
try to limit that a little bit to be prepared for a bad check,
your opinion i'll ever play you love a great everybody loves great who really loves great our little okay.
So please please if you see what all kids and they're trying to see and all of that please you in front of your stand in front of you those parents,
amazingly great go on and do you remember there are little kids there deep you
cuz there's nothing like being a kid's eyes light up when that 5.
I'm down with all those Stormtroopers and all of that is so awesome.
[36:13] You know it's it's truly that's one of the things that I love the most about the braids
watching the kids on the sidelines is everybody passes by because you know there could be 50 Spider-Man marching together and they're all still the kids are high
it just seems Spider-Man really really funny,
the kids reaction they are just little faces they're so cute,
you know if you see if you seek in their family there and they're struggling to see or whatever invite them to stand in front of you,
if obviously you're standing standing in front of them so.
I'm alright Janet what other what other things do we need to make sure that people know about the parade before we throw up we go off to our our game here.

please share where are staging and the band area and i know that when i'm headed down the aging at seven in the morning i already see people on the sidewalk.
[37:46] Taking out there places to watch the parade so the earlier you come the better you're going to
better you're going to end up as far as placements concern I can now can recommend people that they go to elevated spaces if they do not need to be street level that the parking garage is have become very popular
and they are quite a few along the route are you getting added bonus of some shade when your in in a garage,
anna and you can you can pretty much the parade you just not street level of your eye level with the more i'll bet any elevated places even longer out of your it if you wanna get pictures
stand on the top of the steps that are,
the building you're at if there are any lizards have a better
vine line of sight on it
parking is going to be a real problem that I recommended for those try to reserve parking I think parking Panda and a couple of other companies
reserved parking on in Downtown Atlanta it guarantees it will have a space if you need to drive otherwise.
[39:01] Marta is a really good thing and there are q martin stop your close to
Frey route one is Ground Zero and that's the Peachtree Center MARTA station is just a mask

your weird back that this street himself especially one peachtree rd blocked off early at eight thirty,
driving in that area mike what interesting navigating around we need to get this this just something that i can think of really quickly
otherwise we're looking.
[39:54] It doesn't say on that on the point of streets being blocked off in the parade if you're not planning on going to the parade you're just trying to get into a dragon con panel or,
or see a gas that might be going off at that same time be aware that your time to travel will be immensely increased,
around the world for a time you're gonna have to go basically go around.
The parade route to get to wherever you want to get to so few if you have something it's in the Marriott or even in the Hyatt in your on let's say Centennial Park Side of of the Hyatt you're going to have to go down,
I'm not sure what the exact words are both going to go down past the Westin basically and come up,
around that way in order to get in a go through the Habitrail in order to give to get to to to
what if your joaquin you can probably route without going a long way around but you do have to navigate through a lot of people
add my personal that you that the pictures center,
MARTA station that the part that crosses under the street and the Peachtree is just like.

I guess I can attest I can
like to hear that is true I mean all of that is going to be really really blocked if you have something in the Westin and then you're going to try,
you have a ten o'clock what then and you wanna get some milk at eleven thirty and i get.
You probably need to make the decision of which one of those do you want to go to know the tried do you think the block for ten o'clock in and not have the,
we have to much going on when i was able to do that there are gonna be some got panels and things like that,
that will be going on during the parade so if you do want to go between those just remember and if you can't watch the parade and you are at Pawn.

and the streaming membership will have it also later as well so even if it's not live on the streaming it'll be there later so if you are right doing something you can still see the parade you don't have to,
